HandsOn Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is a Blast of Pure Nostalgia

I could never finish any of the old games when I was a kid, but I always enjoyed playing as the Blue Bomber. After the disappointment that was Mighty No. 9, I’ve found myself playing Mega Man Legacy Collection quite often. The games are still super challenging, but playing them provides a nice respite from the glut of open world games being released. When I was told there would be a Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, I became extremely excited. The original Mega Man Legacy Collection featured all six of the brutally difficult NES-era Mega Man titles. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 features everything that came afterward — namely Mega Man 7-10. These titles don’t have the same unified look as that of the original collection since they were made for systems like the SNES, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation 3. Despite being very different titles from one another, each is a solid entry in the classic franchise.I’ve never played Mega Man 7 or Mega Man 8 so I began the demo with those. Despite each being over 20 years, both looked fantastic. 16-bit era titles always seem to hold up well visually and Mega Man 7 is no exception. Mega Man 8 is a 32-bit game but looks 16-bit, albeit with better animations and more colors. Mega Man 8 contains animated cut-scenes full of hilariously cheesy dialogue. I’m kind of upset with myself for missing out on both of these back in the day, but I’m glad I can enjoy them now.Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 have the look and feel of old-school Mega Man titles. This demo only had Mega Man 9, but that wasn’t an issue since I played it and Mega Man 10 on the PlayStation 3. There’s not much to say about these two since they came out so recently (relatively speaking). Those of us who no longer have their PS3s or Xbox 360s and either want to revisit or never played either Mega Man 9 or 10 will have a ball with this collection.Like the previous game, Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 has features that make it easier to play. Each stage automatically saves at certain checkpoints. Players can also turn on “extra armor” in order to absorb more damage. Experienced Mega-aficionados can try to get to the top of a global leaderboard by completing game-specific challenges. Remixed versions of stages are available for those who know the originals inside and out and desire a real challenge. Visuals have been enhanced to work on modern TVs and monitors but still retain their classic aesthetic. The first Mega Man Legacy Collection was brilliant so I’m most definitely looking forward to playing Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 when it comes out on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 8. The game is available for pre-order now on Amazon.Let us know how we’re doinglast_img read more
