The ride-hailing firm is spending US$50 million and partnering with Clorox and Unilever to acquire gloves and disinfectant for its drivers.The Petersen Automotive Museum announces it will host its own Petersen Car Week as a replacement to the largely cancelled Monterey Car Week, replete with a virtual concours and auction.An entrepreneurial restaurateur from Drummondville, Quebec is saving his diner, the Vieux Saint-Charles, by converting it into a drive-in, compete with trays hanging from the windows and Elvis music piped into customers’ cars. Goodbye, 21st century! Welcome back, 1950s kitsch.May 11Defying county orders, Elon Musk re-opened Tesla‘s assembly plant in California, asking workers to come back on a volunteer basis and noting on Twitter that he himself would be walking the line. The axed model may mark the first in the U.S. killed off by COVID-19.Imperial Oil announces it’s handing out 80,000 $25 digital vouchers for gasoline to nurses, paramedics and doctors “currently providing critical care across Canada.” The vouchers, worth a total $2 million, will be handed out September, or until all 80,000 are claimed.April 25A leaked internal email reveals Tesla is asking some employees to return to its California factory April 29, even though the local stay-at-home orders don’t lift until May 3. It’s not the only automaker itching to pull the trigger on resuming production: Ford confirmed it will call in skeleton crews April 27 to prep its factories for re-opening. Ford has seen seven people on its payroll succumb to the respiratory illness, bringing the Detroit Three automakers’ total to 19. General Motors has yet to see an employee die from COVID-19, and says it is actively contemplating re-opening its factories after putting in place health precautions like temperature screenings and spreading assembly line work stations further apart.April 8Rivian confirms it’s pushing back the late 2020 launch of its much-anticipated electric truck and SUV, which were set to be the first to market in that segment. A few days prior, Nissan commits to putting its next-generation Rogue in Canadian dealerships in the fall of this year.General Motors becomes the first automaker to secure an official government contract to build ventilators to supply the U.S. federal stockpile. Sources say the event may be rescheduled for later in the summer.April 6Ford Canada announces it will be joining the slew of Canadian auto parts suppliers who are switching gears to build face shields for hospital staff and first responders; the automaker will specifically re-purpose its factories in Windsor, Ontario for the effort.April 5Tesla releases a video on YouTube showing off a prototype for a ventilator made partly with components from its cars. Days earlier, CEO Elon Musk was being pelted by critics for delivering U.S. hospitals B-PAP machines from China when he’d promised them ventilators.April 3General Motors asked President Donald Trump to remove the 25-per-cent import tariff on parts the company needed to produce the ventilators the federal government had ordered it to. The venue it was to be held in will instead become a field hospital.March 27Just as General Motors worked out how to get production started on thousands of ventilators it wanted to build to relieve demand for the devices at hospitals, President Trump nixed the government deal with the automaker via a bizarre Twitter tirade, citing costs issues. Later in the day, he officially invoked the wartime Defense Production Act that would legally compel GM to build ventilators, even though the company had already joined the effort willingly.Ferrari said it plans to re-open its plant April 14, assuming suppliers have resumed operation at that time and it’s safe to do so; on March 26, Fiat Chrysler and Ford announce production at their U.S. and Canadian plants will resume April 14 as well. VW says its U.S. plants should re-open April 5, and Honda aims for April 7 for its U.S. and Canadian plants.In the absence of real racing, the stars of motorsport – from Valentino Rossi of MotoGP fame to F1’s Nicholas Latifi – are taking to esports to maintain their edge in what’s been an extended off-season. The victim is a 61-year-old man who was a frequent visitor to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market where the virus is thought to have originated.January 7Chinese officials announce they have identified a new virus, initially identified as 2019-nCoV and belonging to the coronavirus family, which includes SARS and the common cold. Trending Videos Ferrari advertisement Union leaders are asking General Motors shut its CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario early. The London Free Press reports Unifor Local 88 expects a coronavirus-driven sales slump will cause layoffs by May and suggests it might be better to shut down operations sooner to better stop the spread of the disease.In response, GM Canada says it will follow the lead of its U.S. parent company.On Sunday, the automaker joined rivals Ford and FCA, along with the United Auto Workers union executive, to form a COVID-19 task force. However, some assembly line workers still feel the re-opening of these facilities may have been rushed.MayMay 28Organizers of the massive Hershey classic car swap meet, held every fall for the past 65 years, announced the event had been cancelled due to limits on crowd sizes. The show that caps off the week-long event may still go ahead, however.May 27Ford announces its developed a software update for its police-spec SUVs that lets the car cook the coronavirus off of its interior surfaces.May 26The Canadian federal government has contracted General Motors Canada to manufacture 10 million face masks to help combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The automaker will make the masks in the Oshawa factories that, until last year, turned out GM vehicles, and will sell the PPE to the government at cost.May 25Production of the C8-gen Chevrolet Corvette is expected to resume tomorrow, reportedly with the assembly of 2020-model-year cars. The start date on 2021-model-year Corvette production has apparently been pushed back to ensure the factory shutdown forced by the pandemic doesn’t impact this generation’s debut model year sales numbers.May 22After initially moving it back from April to August, organizers of the New York auto show have cancelled the event altogether since the venue that’d host it is still being used as a COVID-19 field hospital. Cognitive psychology experiment reveals the invisible world of human perception

first_img“The visual system really cares about objects,” says postdoctoral fellow J. Eric T. Taylor, who is the lead author on the paper. “If I move around a room, the locations of all the objects – chairs, tables, doors, walls, etc. — change on my retina, but my mental representation of the room stays the same.”Objects play such a fundamental role in how we focus our attention that many perception researchers believe we are “addicted” to them; we couldn’t stop paying attention to objects if we tried. The visual brain guides attention largely by selecting objects — and this process is widely believed to be automatic.“I had an inkling that object-based attention cues require a little more will on the observer’s part,” says Taylor. “I designed an experiment to determine whether you can ‘erase’ object-based attention shifting.”Taylor put a new twist on an old and highly influential test known as a “two-rectangle experiment.” The original experiment was instrumental in demonstrating just how deeply objects are ingrained in how we see the world.In the original experiment, test subjects stare at a screen with two skinny rectangles. A brief flash of light draws their attention to one end of one rectangle — say the top end of the left rectangle. Then, a “target” appears, either in the same place as the flash, at the other end of the same rectangle, or at one of the ends of the other rectangle.Observers are consistently faster at seeing the target if it appeared at the opposite end of the original rectangle than if it appeared at the top of the other rectangle – even though those two points are precisely the same distance from the original flash of light.The widely accepted conclusion was that the human brain is wired to use objects like these rectangles to focus attention. Alternately referred to as a “bottom-up” control or a “part of our lizard brain,” object-based attention cues seemed to evoke an involuntary, uncontrolled response in the human brain.Taylor and colleague’s variations added a new element: test observers went through similar exercises, but they were instructed to hunt targets of a specific colour that either matched or contrasted with the colour of the rectangles themselves.“They activate a ‘control setting’ for, say, green, which is a very top-down mental activity,” says Taylor. “We found that when the objects matched the target color, people use them to help direct their attention. But when the objects were not the target colour, people no longer use them — they become invisible.”Test observers are aware of the rectangles on the screen, but when they’re seeking a green target among red shapes, those objects no longer affect the speed with which they find it. In everyday life, we continually create such top-down filters, by doing anything from heeding a “Watch for children” sign to scanning a crowd for a familiar face.“This result tells us that one of the ways we move attention around is actually highly directed rather than automatic,” Taylor says. “We can’t say exactly what we’re missing, but whatever is and is not getting through the filter is not as automatic as we thought.” Stage magicians are not the only ones who can distract the eye: a new cognitive psychology experiment demonstrates how all human beings have a built-in ability to stop paying attention to objects that are right in front of them.Perception experts have long known that we see much less of the world than we think we do. A person creates a mental model of their surroundings by stitching together scraps of visual information gleaned while shifting attention from place to place. Counterintuitively, the very process that creates the illusion of a complete picture relies on filtering out most of what’s out there.In a paper published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics a team of U of T researchers reveal how people have more “top-down” control of what they don’t notice than many scientists previously believed. House opens debate on digital transactions’ value added tax

first_imgThe House of Representatives launched Wednesday the plenary debates on the bill proposing value added tax on digital transactions, with the principal author insisting that the measure does not intend to “impoverish small online sellers” but will optimize taxing opportunity for government.Albay Rep. Joey Sarte-Salceda, chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, sponsored on the floor House Bill 7425 which will subject trade, business and services done electronically or digital to value added tax (VAT).The bill which will amend the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997 consolidates legislative proposals filed by Deputy Speaker  and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto; Deputy Speaker and Ilocos Sur Rep. DV Savellano; Reps. Sharon Garin (AAMBIS OWA Partylist) and Salceda.The bill defines digital service provider (DSP) as a service provider of a digital service or commodity to a buyer, through operating an online platform for purposes of buying and selling of goods or services.A DSP can be a third party, such as a seller of goods and services, who through information-based technology or the internet sells multiple products for its own account.  It may also be a platform provider for promotion that uses the internet to deliver marketing messages or attract buyers.The bill also states that a DSP can be a host of online auctions; a supplier of digital services to a buyer in exchange for a regular subscription fee over the usage of the product or service and a supplier of goods or electronic and online services.For non-resident DSPs, the VAT on transactions will be collected and remitted through its platform.  It also precludes them from claiming creditable input tax.The bill also imposes a five percent VAT to registered non-resident DSPs providing services to the government.  But a 12 percent VAT will be imposed outside such services.In sponsoring the bill, Salceda stressed that there are “safety nets in the Tax Code and other laws that exempt those earning P3 million and below from paying VAT. “I also make the guarantee that we will not tax online barter trades. We are after big businesses who are unfairly raking it in,” he said, apparently anticipating strong opposition to the measure. According to him, HB 7425 “seeks to level the playing field between traditional and digital businesses.”“While the vital role of information and communications technology in nation building has been recognized as early as 2000, with the passage of the Electronic Commerce Act, the tax on online transactions must have the force of law for it to be optimized,” he pointed out.Salceda warned that the government “will lose out” if it fails to tap this new source of revenue which can bring about P31 billion on its first year of implementation.“Mr. Speaker, your Honors, our internet economy annually grows at 20% to 30%. Estimated at USD7 billion in 2019, the internet economy makes up 2.1% of the country’s current GDP, and is expected to hit 5.3% of GDP, or USD25 billion, by 2025,” said Salceda.“This will only keep on growing, and the economy will become increasingly more digital. David Haye Closes Boxing Chapter Of His Life As He Announces Retirement

first_imgDavid Haye has announced his retirement from boxing and that he’s closing that chapter of his life.His retirement from the ring is coming on the back of the 37-year-old’s last fight which was a heavyweight rematch loss to compatriot Tony Bellew, having also lost their first match in March 2017.The Briton hangs up his gloves with a career record of just four defeats in 32 fights.He disclosed his retirement decision via a statement as he said that he was “ready to close this chapter in my life” but “this is not the end of my story – it’s simply the start of something new”.The British boxer became European cruiserweight champion and then won the WBC, WBO and WBA world titles before stepping up to the heavyweight division where he defeated Nikolay Valuev of Russia to claim the WBA heavyweight crown in 2009 thus becoming the second boxer to unify the cruiserweight titles and become a heavyweight world champion after American Evander Holyfield.The victory over Valuev also made him the first Briton to hold a world heavyweight crown since Lennox Lewis.His statement further read as follows: “For my fans, it must have been like going to support their favourite thoroughbred racehorse at the Grand National, only to see their stallion stumble out the gates like a sedated mule at the Donkey Derby.“I saw punches coming but wasn’t quick enough to avoid them.
