Denmark Join France In Last 16 With First Goalless Draw As Peru End 40-Year…

first_imgDenmark became the latest team to qualify for the knockout stage after they forced France to a goalless draw, which was the first recorded at the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia. The 1992 European champions knew a draw in their final Group C clash with France would take them into the last 16 and that was what they got as they produced a dogged defensive display to earn a goalless draw with Les Blues. The result ends the 37-match record start to a World Cup tournament without a goalless draw.In the other Group C game, Peru won their first World Cup game in 40 years (since the win over Iran in 1978) with a 2-0 victory over Australia. The Socceroos needed a win to have any chance of going through to the knockout stage but goals from Andre Carillo and Peru captain Paolo Guerrero either side of halftime gave the South Americans a well deserved victory.Group leaders France will now face the runners-up from Group D in the last 16, while Denmark will do battle with Group D winners in the knockout stage.
