The property is a designated United Nations (UN) building and cannot be occupied by non-UN agencies.Mr. Montague said the JFB is the only such entity in the Caribbean without a “proper headquarters.” He said that, during discussions with Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who headed the Ministry of Construction in the 1980s, the new premises was identified and earmarked for the relocation.“It is central, in the middle of Half-Way-Tree, and is easily accessible for workers who don’t drive,” Mr. Montague added. He noted that it is also some distance from the sea, in case of a sea surge, and that the conference centre was, in many cases, not necessarily compatible with the work of the brigade. The state minister said that the JFB will occupy one of the three buildings at Hagley Park Road. The building is being refurbished at a cost of $40M, for the past three weeks ago, including electrical re-alignment and upgrading, plumbing, installation of partitions and painting.“We hope to be completed with the work by July, for the JFB personnel to move into the facility. In fact, I am confident that it should be completed on time and, hopefully, under budget,” he said.Mr. Montague also said that plans to build a JFB regional training academy at Twickenham Park, St. Catherine, are progressing. The design works have just been completed and the procurement procedures, to select the contractor, will follow shortly. The Department of Local Government is currently drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a local motor vehicle manufacturer, to assist in repairing some of the fire units currently out of operation and deemed “almost written off”.He said that the manufacturer has come up with a proposal to repair some of the parked vehicles which would assist the service in the deep rural areas, until additional equipment arrives.“That is something that we are exploring,” Mr. Montague said.
