LocalNews IICA hopes resilient center will propel private investment by: Dominica Vibes News – August 24, 2018 Tweet Patrick Antoine, Special Advisor to IICA’s Director GeneralThe Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) said one of the main issues raised during discussions with the Ministers of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs was getting the private sector on board with agriculture. Patrick Antoine, Special Advisor to IICA’s Director General said this is a component missing not only in Dominica but the entire Caribbean region. IICA has intentions of building a resilience center in Dominica. “We have not had the substitution from the private sector into the research and expenditure pool to drive innovation and that’s certainly something we want to try to reverse and we’re hoping that the center where you bring innovation here in Dominica with technology and you’re bringing youth into the picture that will attract private investment.”He said therefore, the government’s role in the first instance therefore is to bring in some money to the agricultural sector after which a domino effect is needed. This can be achieved by “ being able to attract the private sector investment that we need to substitute from where we should be in relation to the expenditure in agriculture with expenditures taking place in research and development”.This issue is a very complex one which is key to where the region needs to go, Antoine said adding that IICA is “very much on the ball”.
