Harvey Fierstein on Why He Felt ‘Vilified’ by Gays for Writing Torch Song in the ’80s

first_img Torch Song Related Shows Harvey Fierstein in the ’80s (New York Public Library), in the “Torch Song Trilogy” film(New Line Cinema) & with Michael Urie (Emilio Madrid-Kuser) View Commentscenter_img Torch Song, a reboot of Harvey Fierstein’s award-winning 1982 play Torch Song Trilogy, opens on October 19 at Second Stage. Directed by Moises Kaufman, the production stars Michael Urie as Arnold Beckoff, the Jewish gay drag artist and torch singer Fierstein played in the original production and the subsequent film version. When Fierstein appeared on Show People with Paul Wontorek in 2011, he recalled that the now-loved play made him feel like an enemy of the gay community when it first premiered because of Arnold’s journey from single love addict to a more domesticated life as as a father.”When I wrote Torch Song, I was vilified by the gay community: ‘He’s just trying to make us like heterosexuals. I don’t want to ever get married. Who the hell wants children?’ Now, look around,” Fierstein said. “It’s not about what I want for myself. What I want for myself is my own business. It’s about the fact that I live in America, and America is supposed to be about freedom, and America is supposed to be about choices.”Watch the clip below, and catch Torch Song off-Broadway at the Tony Kiser Theatre. Week 11 DraftKings Picks: Best lineup stacks for NFL DFS tournaments, cash games

first_imgAfter weeks and weeks of high-total games, tasty matchups, and NFL DFS slates that are loaded with great stacking options, Week 11 sees one of the grossest slates of season. Only three of the 10 games this week have totals of 50 points or higher, but with that in mind, it may turn out to be one of the more fun weeks for daily fantasy football tournaments, as DraftKings ownership will likely to be heavily concentrated on the Panthers-Lions, Bucs-Giants, and the Eagles-Saints hammer game.In terms of roster construction, it looks like another week where in cash games we’re going to want to jam two or even three of the high-end running back options into our lineups. I’ll go over a few of my favorite running backs to target in both cash and tournaments, as well as some of the contrarian roster builds that are standing out early in the week. I also love Watson, who has curiously seen his price plummet below $6,000 for only the second time this season despite averaging over 25 fantasy points over the past two games. Watson has been excellent on the road in his career, posting a plus/minus of plus-5.3 over his past eight road games.  There’s plenty of strategy that goes into putting together a winning DFS lineup, and the best place to start is RotoQL’s DFS tools. Our RotoQL’s Lineup Optimizer is a massive advantage when you’re building lineups, regardless of contest size or site. MORE ROTOQL: Week 11 DFS values | DFS Lineup Builder | DFS Strategy 101Last week’s Perfect Lineup Review showed us star players in questionable matchups can really pay off for those in DFS contests, and once again, we saw a QB-receiver stack stand out as key. Last week, we saw McCaffrey erupt for three touchdowns against the Steelers, and he has solidified his every-down role with Carolina after they cut C.J. Anderson on Monday. There are no less than seven high-end running backs who are viable for cash games this week, but for me CMC is the top option in a prime matchup against the Lions. McCaffrey is one of the most game-script independent RBs given his pass-catching ability, and he should feast against a Lions run defense that, while improved following the addition of DT Damon “Snacks” Harrison, still ranks 24th DvP against running backs.Newton let down many DFSer’s last time he was the chalk option at quarterback two weeks ago against the Buccaneers, but this is a perfect time to jump back on him at his $6,200 price point on DraftKings. Newton has the highest DraftSharks NFL projection among quarterbacks on the slate and has posted a plus/minus of plus-4.8 with a zero-percent “dud” rate over his past five games that have totals of 47 points or higher.WEEK 11 DFS CASH LINEUPS: Yahoo | FanDuel | DraftKingsQB Drew Brees and WR Michael Thomas, Saints vs. EaglesThe Saints offense looks like a juggernaut and is likely to be one of the most popular stacking options this week in a home matchup against the Eagles. Philadelphia’s defense was already banged up heading into their Week 10 matchup with the Cowboys and got even thinner following the loss of their best CB, Ronald Darby, who is out for the year with a torn ACL. Brees is the most expensive QB of the week but is still more than affordable on DraftKings at $6,500. Brees has been simply dominate at home this season, posting a plus/minus of plus-8.6 with three of his past four games going over 30 fantasy points. You could honestly make an argument that Brees is $1,000 underpriced given the matchup with the Eagles (23rd DvP) in a game that has by far the highest total on the main slate at 54.5 points. You don’t have to overthink the pairing with Brees in this matchup either, as Thomas is the clear top WR option on the slate. While I will likely look to roster multiple high-end running backs in cash games, you can’t go wrong with rostering Thomas and finding a value RB either. Thomas has an extremely strong correlation score with Brees at 0.45, and similar to Brees, he’s been incredible at home this season, posting a plus/minus of plus-14.0 with an average of 12.5 targets per game in the Superdome this season.  RB James Conner and Steelers D/ST, Steelers @ JaguarsThis season’s fantasy darling has clearly been Conner, and the fairytale will keep rolling on following Le’Veon Bell decision to sit out the entire season. Conner left last week’s game against the Panthers with a concussion, but all reports point toward him being available to play this week against the Jaguars. Conner is by far the best value at RB this week at only $7,200 on DraftKings, which frankly is an egregious pricing for someone who has posted a plus/minus of plus-11.2 this season, with only one “dud” game coming back in Week 4 against the Ravens. You can comfortably look to pair Conner with a Steelers D/ST that has shown great upside this season with four double-digit scoring games.WEEK 11 DFS GPP LINEUPS: Yahoo | FanDuel | DraftKingsWeek 11 DraftKings Picks: Best stacks for daily fantasy football GPPs/tournamentsQB Dak Prescott, RB Ezekiel Elliott, WR Amari Cooper, Cowboys @ FalconsI wanted to put the Saints trio of Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Michael Thomas as the onslaught tournament stack of the week, but they will likely be a popular option being the highest totaled game of the week. With that in mind, I’m going off the board this week to load up on Cowboys, who have a prime matchup against the Falcons.Prescott hasn’t been a great real0life quarterback this season but has actually been a decent fantasy performer, exceeding salary expectations in five of the past six weeks with a plus/minus of plus-4.1. Prescott has to be thrilled with the arrival of Cooper, who he has targeted 18 times through his first two games with the Cowboys, and the duo has a great chance at posting their best game together this week against a Falcons team that ranks 30th DvP against both the QB and WR positions. The final cherry on top to the Cowboys onslaught is Elliott, who is one of the top overall options on the slate. Elliott is coming off his best game of the season against the Eagles on Sunday Night Football and faces a Falcons defense that has allowed 20 more PPR points to running backs in every game this season.QB Deshaun Watson and WR DeAndre Hopkins, Texans @ RedskinsTargeting a high-end wide receiver not named Michael Thomas is going to be a solid tournament tactic this week, and for me, the guy I’m going to look to load up on is Hopkins. I think it’s safe to lock in Hopkins for 10-plus targets each week with old man Demaryius Thomas being the only other receiver to take targets away from him in the Texans offense. Hopkins is just too cheap coming off the Texans bye week at $7,900 in a matchup against the Redskins, who have struggled against wide receivers this season, ranking 25th DvP.last_img read more
