The Texas Department of Public Safety on Wednesday closed the state Capitol and surrounding grounds after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. during the certification of the Electoral College. An official with the law enforcement agency confirmed the move in a statement to The Texas Tribune.“The Capitol and Capitol Complex are closed to the public effective immediately,” the agency said in a statement attributed to Freeman Martin, the agency’s deputy director of homeland security operations. Earlier Wednesday, Trump supporters had also started gathering outside the state Capitol. Media reports did not appear to indicate that the event was violent, with rally goers holding signs and cheering as cars drove by.— By Cassandra Pollock of The Texas Tribune, a nonpartisan, nonprofit media organization that informs Texans — and engages with them – about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues. In a statement soon after, an agency spokesperson told the Tribune that the building and its grounds were closing to the public “out of an abundance of caution” and that “DPS will continue to adjust our operations as needed to maintain public order and address potential threats.”The news comes as chaos erupted in Washington as Trump supporters protested the certification of the Electoral College. The shutdown of the Texas Capitol, which reopened to the public Monday after being closed for months, also comes days before the Texas Legislature is set to convene for its 2021 legislative session.
CANADA: Agence Métropolitaine de Transport and Hydro-Québec agreed on May 5 to invite proposals for a study to determine the feasibility of electrifying four of Montréal’s commuter rail routes totalling 250 km.Only one line, the Deux-Montagnes, is now operated by electric traction. Converting the Dorion, Blainville and Delson routes would cost more than C$300m, according to an AMT estimate. The Mont-St-Hilaire line was not included in the figure but will be part of the study. Electrification, if approved, could be installed over 15 years, beginning in 2011, with Hydro-Québec contributing to the cost. Meanwhile, an environmental report released on May 8 by the Québec Bureau d’Audiences Publiques en Environnement has endorsed plans for the proposed Train de l’Est commuter rail project to Repentigny and Mascouche. But the BAPE report said AMT had not demonstrated that the proposed alignment was the best option. The electrified route would add an estimated 11 000 weekday riders; the existing AMT system carries 16 million passengers a year, the sixth largest commuter rail ridership in North America.

Abductors of the father of Chelsea’s Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi have made contact with his family.Michael Obi, who runs a transport firm in Jos, has not been seen since Friday. But, on Tuesday, Obi’s family had two calls from the abductors, who firstly told them that Michael had been moved out of Jos to commercial capital Lagos. With the abductors – who refused to say who they are or what their intent is – yet to make any demand, the family met police after this latest development. In a second call a few hours later on Tuesday, the abductors gave the family the location of the car which Michael Obi was driving when he went missing. The car was then found in Jos, but the Obi family refused to say where exactly it was recovered. “Yes, they found his car and spoke with them which is a positive step forward,” Babawo Muhamed, a close friend of the Chelsea player, told BBC Sport. “Hopefully, they will be in touch again. Mikel has been greatly affected by this. But he is holding on.”The latest development is likely to come as a relief for the concerned Obi, whose family held a prayer vigil at the family compound on Monday.Police declined to issue a statement on the latest development.Obi was told of his father’s abduction before Sunday’s goalless Premier League draw between Chelsea and Stoke City, but decided to play.“I’ve always tried to help the country, this is the time for the country to help me,” Mikel said on Monday. “Whoever knows where my dad is should please contact me.”
SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah head swimming coach Greg Winslow has been suspended from his job pending an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl while at his previous job in Arizona six years ago.Winslow is alleged to have sexually abused the minor when he was the coach at Sun Devil Aquatics, a club team at Arizona State University, in 2007, according to a statement from Arizona State University following a lengthy investigation by the Arizona State University Police Department.News of the allegations first surfaced Wednesday night when a blogger posted that a police report had been filed about the alleged incident in Arizona and the story was reported by Swimming World Magazine. The allegations claim the abuse happened in a locked coach’s office. It is alleged to have continued over a two-year period. The Utah swimming and diving team is currently competing at the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash., which run through next Wednesday. In regards to the accusations leveled against Winslow, director of athletics Chris Hill made the following statement Thursday.“The Athletics Department first learned of the allegations against our swim coach Greg Winslow last night,” Hill said. “While it is my understanding from an article published this morning that charges have not been filed against Coach Winslow, I feel the allegations are serious enough to suspend him immediately pending further investigation.”Hill has appointed Richard Marschner, who is in his third year as the diving coach, as the interim swimming and diving coach. He will oversee both the men’s and women’s teams. In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Hill said University of Utah officials learned Thursday morning that Arizona State University’s police department had contacted the University of Utah’s Department of Public Safety on Dec. 5, 2012, regarding Winslow.”The police chief was asked by the investigators when they called to keep it confidential, and he did,” said Keith Sterling, communications director for the University of Utah. “So no one was made aware of these allegations until last night when the news broke.”Concussion Inc. first reported the allegations involving the unidentified teenage swimmers at the Arizona club. In a statement to the website, Winslow said: “These are extremely serious allegations, and if I am accused, I will certainly respond.”Hill said a number of factors went into deciding to place Winslow on leave before charges are filed, but first and foremost was the serious nature of the allegations. He said they will continue to seek more information, but so far have relied on news reports. “We have not heard anything yet, from anybody today, nothing official,” said Hill. “In many ways we’re reacting as you are today, something we’ve just heard.”Winslow has also been under investigation by the University of Utah’s Office of Equal Opportunity for incidents involving African-American swimmer Karson Applin. The OEO talked to more than 50 swimmers in an investigation spanning nearly three months.According to Hill, the OEO advised him in late January that no disciplinary action was recommended.Because of that, the administration took no action against Winslow.During Winslow’s six years as the U. coach, well over a dozen swimmers either quit or were dismissed from the team. Also two of his assistant coaches resigned last year and have taken other collegiate swimming jobs.Hill said the only other issue Winslow has had is some struggles with alcohol, which he’s been very open about, Hill said.Winslow does oversee a swim camp during the summer at the University of Utah. Those who work at the camp undergo background checks, said Hill.As for how the team is handling the situation at such a critical point in the season, Hill isn’t sure.”I haven’t talked to anyone on the swim team,” he said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
